Remy Hair: Why It's the Best for Hair Extensions

Hair Health

If you're considering getting hair extensions, it's important to understand the difference between the types of hair available, as products vary in quality depending on the hair that is used. The best kind of hair for extensions and wigs is 100% remy human hair and this is what we use in our products here at Tess Hair.

What is Remy Hair?

Some kinds of hair used in extensions can feel rough or tangle easily. This occurs because of the way the hair is collected, as the cuticles on the surface of the hair may not all face the same direction the way they naturally would. Hair like this is difficult to style. It doesn't look good and it certainly doesn't feel nice and silky.

Remy hair, however, is 100% human hair and is handled carefully to ensure all the cuticles face the same direction. This greatly reduces the chance of the hair catching or tangling.

Why it's the Best

There's a lot of reasons why remy hair is the ideal kind of hair to make into extensions and other products. Most importantly, remy hair:

  • Has a luxurious feel and shiny, healthy appearance
  • Doesn't tend to tangle or frizz
  • Can be straightened, curled, and styled in various ways
  • Can be washed and blow dried
  • Is able to be dyed

It also suits all kinds of extensions, whether tape-in or clip in. At Tess Hair, we offer tape extensions for a longer-lasting style, as well as an assortment of different kinds of clip-in products like wefts, halos, and ponytails so that you can choose the type of product that is best for your needs.

Caring for Remy Hair
Because it is human hair, the way you care for it is very similar to how you would care for your own hair. It can be washed and dried very easily, but there are a few things to note depending on what type of product you're using.

If you have tape-in extensions, these are designed to remain in your hair for a long period of time but the bond of the tape can weaken if you use a shampoo that is too harsh or you scrub at those areas too aggressively. The best way to care for your beautiful Tess Hair extensions is to primarily shampoo slightly away from your roots where the tape is, outwards towards the ends and be gentle with the entire process including any towel-drying afterwards.

You can also wash your clip-in remy hair extensions and this may be necessary from time to time if you wear them often or they happen to get dirty for whatever reason. You can choose to wear them while you wash your hair to make this easier, or wash them separately if you prefer. If you wash them separately, ensure that you only use a very small amount of shampoo and conditioner to match the amount of hair you're working with.

For the best results with either kind of remy extensions, always use a mild sulfate-free shampoo and rinse this out with lukewarm water. Follow this with a good quality conditioner to add moisture back in so that your remy hair maintains its smoothness and shine, then style as desired.

Can You Dye Remy Hair?
Remy hair can be dyed if necessary, although it's always best to choose the color closest to your own hair color to avoid this if possible. If you do have to dye your hair extensions, you should only dye them darker and aim for only a small change to preserve the quality and healthy texture of the hair.

Just like your own hair, your hair extensions look and feel best when you care for them properly and avoid causing any avoidable damage.

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

The durability of your extensions depends on what kind of product you've chosen and how you care for them. Tape-in remy extensions are the most convenient because they remain in your hair and only need to be removed and re-positioned when your hair has grown after several weeks. This does mean they get more use though.

If you're careful with them, they can easily last up to a year, while clip-in products will last about the same amount of time with frequent use, potentially longer if used infrequently and stored properly between uses. Choose the product that's most convenient for you because both kinds are quality and only differ in terms of the convenience of not having to reset them every day.
